PUBLISHING & BOOK VISIBILITY
Promotion doesn’t create clarity. It amplifies whatever clarity — or lack of it — already exists.

Faced with a book that isn’t getting traction, the instinct is almost always to promote harder: more posts, more outreach, more launch activity. It is rarely the right first move. Promotion is an amplifier, and amplifying an unclear signal just produces a louder, still-unclear signal. The work that actually changes outcomes usually has to happen before the promotion, not instead of it.
What has to be true first
Three things, in this order. Who the book is actually for — specifically enough that a stranger could describe the reader, not just “people who like [genre].” What the book is actually about, in one sentence a reader could repeat to someone else without losing the meaning. And why now — what makes this the right moment for that reader to pick it up, rather than a book that could have been published any year.
Why this sequence matters
Skipping straight to promotion without settling these questions means every promotional effort is built on a shifting foundation — the pitch changes depending on who’s asked, the audience targeting is vague, and the results are correspondingly inconsistent. Settling positioning first means every subsequent piece of promotion reinforces the same clear signal instead of adding noise to an unclear one.
Insight, strategy, execution — applied to a launch
This is the same sequence that governs any SLD engagement, applied to a book launch specifically. Insight: understand precisely who the book serves and why. Strategy: decide how that positioning gets expressed across metadata, platform, and messaging before a single promotional post goes out. Execution: only then does amplification — launch activity, outreach, paid or organic promotion — begin, carrying a signal worth amplifying.
What changes once positioning is settled
Promotion stops feeling like effort spent hoping something sticks, and starts compounding — because every piece of activity reinforces the same clear story instead of testing a new one each time.
Before the next promotional push, it’s worth confirming the positioning underneath it is actually settled.
